Prayer & Fasting 2022 // Day 7
Drew Fain
January 23, 2022
You have put more joy in my heart
than they have when their grain and wine abound.
In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:7-8
What is the primary thing you have learned through the Covid-19 pandemic?
Iām not talking about the general knowledge we have all picked up about viruses and vaccines, but what have you learned about life as a whole over the past two years? If you have yet to take a moment to consider this, this is your invitation to do so.
For me, I have become more keenly aware of how fragile life is. The shifting mandates, uneasy political climate, unstable economy, and evolving social norms have affected each and every one of us to varying degrees. Personally, the loss of my grandmother, the move into a new apartment, entering into a romantic relationship, the transitions within our church community, and shifts within my work role have transformed my life dramatically from what it was before Covid.
But the more I become aware of the fragility of life, the more I experience stability in Christ. While our feelings of freedom or safety shift and shake with the whims of politicians, as believers we have a hope and joy that cannot be stolen by any power or circumstance. This passage in Psalms is as true now as ever for those of us who find our home in Jesus. Christ gives us access to more joy than the best life can offer otherwise. No riches (grain) or pleasure (wine) can even come close to the unshakable joy to be found in Christ. We may even lay down our guards and rest into him and we will be safe regardless of what life throws at us.
So for today, day 7 of the fast, this is your invitation to rest your joy onto the unshakable foundation that is Jesus. Come, rest into all that he has done for you. He is better than the best life has to offer.
